A smaller U.S. footprint
Pizza Hut is still one of the largest pizza chains in the U.S., but it has been shrinking at home. It ended 2025 with 6,121 U.S. restaurants, down from 6,551 five years earlier, as franchisees closed older dine-in “Red Roof” buildings and focused on delivery and carryout.
Who owns Pizza Hut?
In 2026, Yum! Brands, which also owns KFC and Taco Bell, sold Pizza Hut in two deals worth about $2.7 billion in total:
- Mainland China: sold to Yum China Holdings for about $1.2 billion; the sale closed on August 7, 2026.
- Everywhere else, including the U.S.: sold to the private equity firm LongRange Capital for about $1.5 billion; the sale closed on September 1, 2026.
LongRange describes Pizza Hut outside mainland China as more than 15,500 restaurants in 108 countries. Pizza Hut’s U.S. headquarters is in Plano, Texas, and almost all of its U.S. restaurants are owned and run by franchisees, which is why prices and hours vary from one location to the next.
Where it started
Brothers Dan and Frank Carney opened the first Pizza Hut in Wichita, Kansas, in 1958. The chain became known for its red-roofed dine-in restaurants, the Original Pan pizza (1980), Original Stuffed Crust (1995) and the BOOK IT! reading program for kids, which began in 1984.
